Description
The story behind the artwork: When we were young my cousin Morgan Moses used to come and stay with us in Mangere. One day we were playing swing ball and he started saying ‘Helen Helen Watermelon I’m going to beat you.’ The name stuck and today he still greets me with that name. To create my watermelon curtain I used cardboard strips, rollers, and stamps to get the green patterns and made a foam stamp for the seeds. I used handmade paper in watermelon colours and made interesting shaped prints using foam, cardboard and stamps in black paint and inks. I layered these together and thought I would divide the colours with white paper. I liked the look of the different cuts of watermelon to show the inside and outside. I strung them together and hung them on a stick.
This artwork has different prints on each side.
